Calamity.

I watched my mother dip chocolates last night. She's so graceful, even when working with simplistic things. A spoon and a bowl of microwaved Ghiradelli became an art. I asked to test my own skills, dip my toes in the ripples of milky masterpieces. It's obviously not an inherited trait. I've been reading so much about the road. Hitchhiking from one side of the continent to the other, if I weren't so scared, and if I had a better knapsack, I would almost consider it. The empty lot that overlooks my bedroom window, it's been full the past few days. Crumbling beneath the footsteps of a hundred people. They reminded me of an underground colony of ants. Haeleigh said they were shooting a film of some sort, she saw familiar instruments. Three days, I woke to the sounds of them across the busy road, and then one morning, they were gone. Slipped out in the middle of the night. It was almost sad to watch them go. I felt like they owed me a goodbye. It's strange, that my mind went to that. I should have been grateful for the calm, but I missed the calamity.

  2. Women and chocolate. It's our catnip and our familiar, isn't it?

In my 20s, I read a lot of Kerouac. I can't imagine reading it now, but I wouldn't be who I am if I hadn't. Early in life, The Road is outside of one's self. Later, it is inside. Or so says me, for whatever that's worth.

I like the notion that they owed you a goodbye. You are still thinking about them. So they left you a gift in parting, yes?

  3. When I was young and foolish (as opposed to aged and should know better) I hitch rides around my college town with strangers. No harm, much danger, but I was kept safe for future tests of faith.

I actually saw Jack Kerouac at a lecture in those same years. I remember that there were others who spoke before him and his first words were, "I've got to pee, and I bet you do,too. So see you all in ten minutes and by the way the guys in the windbreakers are Narcs, so hide your stash." Yeah, it was a different time and certainly a different place.
